This shows a welcome to gadsden sign and an image of one of our group leaders named Cletus. A possum is also present.
A possum with a chefs hat stands in a dirt covered road with a "welcome to Gadsden" sign in the background.
Shows our lovable possum mascot and amidst a poinsetta background. The name of the group (Barefoot Gadsden Alabama Against Sock Oppression is written above the possum.

Our mascot:

Terry the Sock-Less Possum

He lost three toes to a Gadsden pothole incident and still doesn’t wear socks...he’s an inspiration to us all.

Fun Fact: Opossums (the American version of possums) are nature's ultimate survivors. They "play dead" when threatened, have 50 teeth (more than any North American mammal), and their hairless tails, ears, and toes make them prone to frostbite in cold snaps…hence why they hunker down in winter burrows.

Terry the song's hero likely draws from this resilience, turning it into a lesson on bravery and curiosity.

Our Unique Story

We were founded in 2014 outside the Dollar General in Gadsden, Alabama, when Brother Cletus Ray “Skeeter” McCoy tried to return a 6-pack of tube socks because “they done rubbed a blister in his right foot bigger than a pecan sandy.”

The cashier refused. Skeeter took off his socks right then and there in the parking lot, threw them in the bed of his truck, and declared the revolution had begun.
